FACT SHEET By-catch Stunner Our award-winning Ace stunner technology • Culls by-catch fish humanely without using chemicals • Your first choice for animal welfare What it is In aquaculture, as in wild catch fishing, unintended fish are sometimes inadvertently gathered for stunning and slaughter. This may be cleaner fish that were missed in the separation process, or wild fish that entered the sea pens as small juveniles. Humane and efficient handling of these fish is important. Returning them to the wild is unlikely to be practical, humane or consistent with disease management strategies. Anaesthetic is the most common humane approach to culling by-catch fish, but this prevents them from being used as a protein source. In addition, the fish processor must cover the cost of the anaesthetic and the cost of responsible disposal of the toxic anaesthetic residue and fish carcasses. The Ace By-catch stunner culls by-catch fish humanely without using chemicals. This creates potential new uses for by-catch fish for example in premium pet food, as food for farm or zoo animals, fish oils etc. This approach allows processors to use fish that would otherwise be discarded, improving efficiency, reducing environmental impact and contributing to sustainability. Why we developed it We wanted to develop a stunner to ensure fish bycatch are killed humanely, can be used as a source of protein and oil, and are at least cost neutral, if not contributing to a processor’s revenues. How it works After separation from the harvest fish, by-catch flow into the by-catch stunner tube. An electric field inside the tube, renders the fish immediately unconscious. The fish flow through the stun tube in 30s – 60 seconds (determined by the water pump speed) and so on exit are beyond recovery. The Ace By-catch stunner has a 100% stun rate, meeting all requirements for humane slaughter. It can be used on boats, barges, and land-based processing units - wherever the fish are being processed.
