HOW AN ELECTRIC FENCE WORKS ELECTRIC FENCING HOW AN ELECTRIC FENCE WORKS An electric fence, which can be either battery or mains powered, converts this power to high voltage pulses. If the wire carrying the pulse is touched by an animal, the current passes through the animal to the ground, thus giving a shock to the animal. Cattle and Dairy Cows These are easily fenced with the minimum of problems, dairy cows which are already used to an electric fence can normally be strip grazed using a single strand of wire or tape. Energetic and lively ponies and horses can be easily fenced. The electric...

HOW AN ELECTRIC FENCE WORKS ELECTRIC FENCING The basic principle is to obtain a perfect balance between the different components of an electric fence, the energiser, the earthing system and the electric fence line. Using a powerful fencer with a low conductivity wire, badly installed or maintained will give poor results and unsatisfactory service. Allows rechargeable batteries to be used and facilitates a more powerful battery powered energiser. (B40, DG1 & DG3) Please note the B20, B30, B50 & B60 can also be powered of a 12V battery. The Energiser The heart of the system, there are many models...

ELECTRIC FENCING HOW AN ELECTRIC FENCE WORKS Checking the Installation The connections between the energiser and the fence line should be firm and with a good connection. If the wires are passng through i a wall you need to make sure that they are properly insulated, if this is not done there is the possibility of power being diverted from the fence into the ground. For permanent fences, regular inspection of the line is essential. Weeds and branches touching the line should be removed. Any vegetation in contact with the fence reduces efficiency and performance, particularly during damp and wet...

EARTHING SYSTEMS ELECTRIC FENCING Installing the Earthing System Without an earthing system for the energiser there would be no shock at the fence line. An earthing system works in much the same way as an aerial does for a radio but instead of collecting airwaves, the earthing system picks up electrons from the ground, which are transmitted with each pulse out along the fence line. For the exact number of earth bars to be used on the Forcefield Fence range please refer to the Mains and Battery fence section of the catalogue. The stronger the energiser the better the earth required. Electrical...

ELECTRIC FENCING EARTHING SYSTEMS Checking Earthing System Visibility and Maintenance of the Earthing System When the earthing system is installed, it is vital to test it. First you need to simulate heavy vegetation loading on the fence line. Place an iron bar in the ground about 100m out along the fence and lean it against the fence wires. Plug in the energiser and check the voltage reading along the fence line. If it reads 1000 volts or less, a sufficiently heavy load has been put on the energiser. If the voltage is still above this, place more iron bars along the line until the voltage drops...
