Growing crops on water Growing on water or ‘Hydroponics’ can be used for growing short-cycle crops such as lettuce and herbs. Insulating floats with plant holders in which the suspended young plants can absorb their nutrients and water are floated in special, shallow, growing trays. Hydroponics is an closed growing system. This means that both the water and the fertilisers that are added to the system only leave the system through consumption by the actual crop.
