Water mist as a Tire extinguishing medium The high heating capacity of water (4.2J/g.K) and a high latent vaporisation heat (2442 J/g) can absorb a significant amount of heat from fire and fuels. Water also expands to 1700 times its volume when it evaporates into steam, which results in a dilution of the surrounding oxygen layer and fuel vapours. Due to the formation of tiny droplets, the effectiveness of the water used is heightened as the actual water used will be able to treat a significantly larger surface area.
