Yukon technical - 1

Yukon - for reliable delivery of high starch yield Yukon is a versatile, very early maturing maize variety (MC 10) with superb early vigour and high starch potential. Together with its excellent standing power, it has the flexibility to be used for crimped or dried grain, as well as for forage maize. Early forage with high starch yield Yukon has excellent early maturity (maturity class 10) and is suitable for growing in marginal areas. Yukon is also capable of yielding over 6 tonnes/hectare of starch, and is amongst the top 10% starch yielding varieties on the NIAB list. Yukon is therefore a good variety choice for complementing grass silage in dairy rations. Ideal for crimping Yukon’s high starch yield, together with its superb early cob maturity and good standing power make it very suitable for combining and the production of crimped maize. In Denmark, Yukon is already widely grown for crimping, appreciated for its good grain yield potential. Grain potential In the MGA/NIAB trials in 2011, Yukon demonstrated excellent performance and attributes for grain -quickly drying down to the desired low moisture content and delivering a grain yield of 12.8 tonnes/ hectare @ 15% moisture content. Good fusarium resistance Maize varieties which are prone to ‘cob snouting’, i.e. when the leaves on the cob do not cover the tip, are more prone to fusarium infection. This fungal infection can lead to mycotoxins being present in the silage, which is detrimental to animal health. Yukon is a variety with excellent cob sheath cover. As a result, Yukon demonstrates significant resistance to fusarium infection of the ear. Yukon - the flexible high performer Yukon’s early maturity and high starch yield make it an excellent choice for livestock farmers wanting to balance grass silage. Yukon also has the flexibility to be used as a crimping or grain variety. It gives the opportunity to grow one crop and harvest some for forage and leave some for harvesting the grain later to make a high energy moist feed. It can also be grown for grain, as a cash crop.
