Product catalog summary
Overview: The Black Spanish Round radish, known scientifically as Raphanus sativus, is a winter radish variety characterized by its large, dark-colored tubers with firm flesh and excellent storage quality. Its rich flavor is attributed to mustard seed oil in its storage tissue.
Specifications: The radish originates from the eastern Mediterranean and Asia. It takes 13 to 15 weeks to harvest winter radish, compared to 8 to 10 weeks for summer varieties. Early harvesting is recommended to avoid the radish becoming woody.
Cultivation: Spring and summer radishes should be sown from April to early August, while autumn and winter varieties are best sown from early July to late August. Pre-cultivation of summer radish can begin in February in cool conditions. Seeds should be planted 25 to 30 cm apart and 2 to 3 cm deep in compost-padded furrows. Germination takes two to three weeks depending on soil temperature.
Growing Conditions: Radishes prefer full sun and are suitable for mixed cultivation with carrots, tomatoes, and beans. Regular watering is crucial to prevent bitterness and cracking of tubers. Fertilization should be minimal to avoid nitrate accumulation. A cultivation guard net is recommended to protect against pests like cabbage flies and flea beetles.
Care and Maintenance: Consistent watering is essential, and care should be taken to avoid uneven watering to prevent tuber cracking. Minimal fertilization is advised due to the plant's tendency to store nitrates. Protection against pests is recommended.

Its rich flavour is due to the mustard seed oil that is embedded in the storage tissue. With summer radish varieties it will take about 8 to 10 weeks until harvest, whereas winter radish takes 13 to 15 weeks. In case of doubt, it is always better to harvest the radish earlier rather than later, as it will become woody when harvested too late Natural location: The radish has its origin presumably in the eastern Mediterranean and in Asia. Cultivation: You can sow the spring and summer radish between April and the beginning of August, whereas autumn and winter radish should be sown between the beginning of July and the end of August. Summer radish also can be pre-cultivated from February on in a cool room on the windowsill or in a greenhouse. With radish varieties that develop long and straight tubers you should break up and loosen the soil a little bit deeper accordingly. Place the seeds with 25 to 30 cm space in between about 2 to 3 cm deep into seed furrows that are provided with some compost padding. Depending on the ground temperature, it will take two to three weeks until germination. Place: Like most vegetables, radish prefers a full-sunny place. It is very much suited for mixed cultivation along with carrots, tomatoes and beans. Care: Water the plant regularly, as with persistent dryness the tuber will cease to grow, become unsavoury and bitter, and the plant tends to shoot. With unevenly watering the tubers often become cracked. Hold back on fertilizing as radish has the peculiarity to take and store the nitrates. Radish is a rather undemanding plant. However, providing a cultivation guard net can be recommended, as radish is popular with cabbage flies and flea beetles. During the winter: Sow again in the next year. © Saflax * Frank Laue * Gropiusstraße 7a * 48163 Münster * Germany / Allemagne / Germania / Alemania Alle Rechte vorbehalten / All rights reserved / Tous droits réservés / Tutti i diritti riservati / Todos los derechos están reservados / 無断転用禁止 Verwendung nur nach schriftlicher Zustimmung / Using only with prior written permission / Utilisation uniquement avec autorisation écrite préalable / L'utilizzo solo previa autorizzazione scritta / El uso se admiten sólo con una autorización previa por esc
