Temperature maintenance Cell metabolism generates heat as a waste product and so as the embryos grow they produce more and more heat. After the mid-point of incubation eggs begin to produce excess heat. Although some metabolic heat is lost through the evaporation of water vapour from the egg and the transfer of heat to the air in the incubator, a cooling system is needed to remove the excess heat.
