Translation Profi article, 3/2015, Section: Finishing Technology Operation Report: Weda Suckling Piglet Feeding Nutrix+ Minimum Quantities for Great Weight Gains From 2015 onwards, Weda have been offering their Suckling Piglet Feeding “Nutrix+“. Besides the use of milk, it can also pump smallest amounts of cost-effective piglet feed into the farrowing section. We have already been able to carefully examine the prototype in practice for you. Here are the details of its technology and of the significance of an oval shape trough of plastic material. Weda Nutrix+, available since the beginning of 2015, allows the feeding of suckling piglets with milk, prestarter and starter feed in the form of mash. The plastic trough, integrated into the pen partitions, encourages the early and ample uptake of feed by the animals. Photos: Tovornik ows with insufficient milk yields have always existed. However, as pig management has in recent years achieved a lot with regard to an increase of litter sizes, the scope for animal transfer is nowadays considerably smaller than it was well over ten years ago. In order to ensure the supply of the piglets with milk, most sow managements nowadays make use of supplementary feed. In most farms, during the first eight days milk - suited for the needs of suckling piglets - is poured into a bowl inside the farrowing pen by means of a watering can. Later on, the animals will additionally receive prestarter and piglet starter feed. At the time of weaning on the 28th day, the piglets are already used to the uptake of solid feed – and therefore also to its taste. So much for the theory. The problem, however, is only that the daily feeding of several portions of milk is rather a time-consuming affair. OK, for a few years now, positive technical solutions have already been in existence, like for example feed carts for the mixing and for the transport of milk. Or the solution of a feed station where the milk is pumped from the feed chamber underneath the walking floors to the farrowing pens. But in general, all solutions have until now shown that the feeding of cost-effective “piglet starter feed I” is more or less an impossible thing. At this point, the sensor controlled suckling piglet feeding system “Nutrix+” of Weda comes into play. At a first glance, it closely resembles a conventional liquid feeding system. In contrast, the Nutrix+ is able to doPage 1 of 4 sificate pure milk as well as also viscous feed mash in smallest amounts of just 0.1 ltrs at the trough. This is made possible by means of a frequency regulated centrifugal pump, which operates in combination with a compressor unit. This way, the air always presses the feed from the line into the direction of the valves when the feed tank is empty and when, consequently, the pump is out of operation. Also, at the end of the day, the air presses the pipes clean so that these can then be rinsed with water and successively be disinfected with a mixture of air-water-acid. Let us start with the feed preparation. For each feeding, resp., for each farrowing group, a 125 ltrs feed container is

component. In case different kinds of feed are fed out, resp., up to three piglet groups have to be supplied, the installation of up to three containers will be possible. In our case of a farm, which produces in a 5-weeks‘ rhythm, only one storage container was installed for the feed provision of 650 suckling piglets. On the first and second day after farrowing, the farmer uses the unit only for stirring of the milk as - measured by the feed dispensation of just about 23 litres - the average stay inside the unit would otherwise be too long. fixed nominal temperature value is reached at the time of the mixing of the temperature-sensitive prestarter - very convenient. Via a separate bucket outlet, milk can be let out for drinkers and for the complete emptying of the pipes. By the way: The unit control is a stand-alone version, which is independent of other systems. Those customers already in possession of a Weda unit can, however, connect the Nutrix+ unit by means of a data cable so that data can be made available this way and can be altered from any location. The insight into the unit, resp., the control of the consumption data...

In test operation, the separation part still looked slightly provisional. The blue air ducts for the control of the valves and for cleaning the pipes are however easy to see. The feeding computer is a stand-alone version. During mixing, this considers the different temperature requirements of milk and prestarter. lye is an important contribution. The rule, however, will then be that the pipes are only emptied each day and become disinfected by means of a spray mist of peracetic acid. The use of lye thus reduces itself to the main cleaning after the stalling out of the animals, which saves...
